Razor Clamming Basics

Start here if you are new to razor clamming. This page covers the basic equipment, planning, and beach habits that make a first trip easier.

What Razor Clamming Is

Razor clamming is the process of locating razor clam shows in wet beach sand and digging quickly with a clam gun or shovel before the clam moves deeper. Success comes from reading the beach, using the right tool, and working efficiently.

What to Bring

Bring a clam gun or shovel, a legal container for your catch, waterproof boots or waders, warm layers, gloves, and a headlamp for low-light digs. Keep your shellfish license and current regulations handy before you leave.

Before You Go

Check that the beach is open, review the applicable limit and digging rules, look at the tide and weather, and arrive early enough to find parking and walk to the digging area.
