This measurement alone does not determine whether a beach is open or safe for harvesting.
View domoic acid historyWashington Department of Fish & WildlifeCopalis has multiple public beach access points, including popular approaches in the Ocean Shores area. Access varies by location, and some approaches may allow vehicles onto the beach when conditions permit.
Beach access can change because of tides, storms, erosion, soft sand, or temporary restrictions. Use established approaches and pay attention to posted signs and current beach conditions.
Parking options vary by access point. Some locations provide parking near the beach, while portions of the beach may allow vehicle access and parking when conditions and regulations permit.
Popular razor clam openings can become crowded. Arriving early gives you time to find an access point, prepare your gear, and reach a good digging area before the best part of the tide.
Facilities vary depending on where you access the Copalis digging area. Developed access points and nearby communities such as Ocean Shores offer restrooms, food, fuel, and other services.
Bring everything you need onto the beach, including warm and waterproof clothing, drinking water, a light for evening digs, a clam container, and your clam gun or shovel.
Copalis offers a long stretch of productive razor clam habitat, but harvesting is allowed only during approved openings. Tentative dig dates can change or be canceled before final approval, so check the latest information before leaving home.
Plan to reach the beach before the listed low tide and watch for clam shows as the water recedes. During busy openings, walking away from the most heavily crowded access areas may give you more room to search for clams.
Each digger should have the required license and digging equipment and keep their own clams in a separate container. Watch the surf carefully, particularly during evening digs and periods of rough weather.
