Conditions

Tide height matters, but wind, surf, rain, darkness, beach traffic, and recent wave action can all change the experience.

Surf and Wind

Heavy surf can repeatedly cover clam shows and make digging difficult. Strong wind also makes cold conditions feel much more severe.

Lighting

Evening and early-morning digs require dependable lighting. A headlamp keeps both hands free and a backup light is worth carrying.

Beach Surface

Freshly washed, firm sand can make shows easier to see, while heavily tracked or churned-up areas can be harder to read.
