Kalaloch is Washington's northernmost major razor clam management area, located along the Pacific coast of the Olympic Peninsula. Its remote setting and dramatic coastline make digging here a different experience from the more developed razor clam beaches farther south.
Kalaloch does not necessarily open on the same dates as Washington's other razor clam beaches. Always check the current schedule and verify that Kalaloch is specifically listed as open before making the trip.
Kalaloch is reached from U.S. Highway 101 on the western side of the Olympic Peninsula. Beach access is available from several locations along the Kalaloch coast, but reaching the sand may require walking from a parking area or descending established beach access trails.
Unlike some Washington razor clam beaches, you should not plan on driving your vehicle onto the beach. Check current access conditions before traveling, particularly after storms or periods of high surf.
Parking is available at designated access areas along the Kalaloch coast. Because access is generally on foot, allow extra time to park, gather your equipment, and walk to the beach before the optimal digging period.
Parking and beach access can become busy during approved razor clam openings, so arriving well before low tide is recommended.
Kalaloch is more remote than many of Washington's other razor clam beaches, and facilities vary by access location. Restrooms and other visitor facilities may be available at developed areas, but services can be limited or seasonal.
Bring everything you need for the trip, including food and water, warm and waterproof clothing, a light for evening digs, a clam container, and your clam gun or shovel.
Kalaloch can offer excellent razor clamming during approved openings, but openings may be less frequent than at some of Washington's southern razor clam beaches. Make sure the current WDFW announcement specifically includes Kalaloch before traveling.
Plan to reach the beach before the listed low tide and look for clam shows as the water recedes. Because some access points require a walk from the parking area, give yourself additional time compared with beaches where you can park closer to the digging area.
Each digger should have the required license and digging equipment and keep their own clams in a separate container. Be particularly cautious around surf, driftwood, steep beach access areas, and changing weather conditions along the Olympic coast.
